If you want to keep your car’s interior in showroom condition you simply need to get into the habit of doing something every day. You can’t rely on your mechanic to clean the interior every time you have a car service; after all he is trained to look after the mechanical aspects of your vehicle, nothing else.
But, it is certainly worth while keeping your car looking good especially when it comes to resale. You’ll also enjoy your car more and be able to take pride in the fact that you are protecting a valuable investment.
Let’s take a look at the things you have to do to keep your car’s interior looking as good as new.
Equipment.
In the first place you’ll need to purchase a vacuum cleaner with a range of attachments that can get into narrow crevices around the seats and other parts of the dashboard. A regular vacuum once a week will keep the floor and seats clean, but you should take extra care in using a narrow mouth attachment to keep the areas around the handbrake and between the seats clean as well. Don’t forget to remove the floor mats and clean them separately outside the car.
Weekly Cleaning Tasks.
Wipe down the vinyl or leather seats with the appropriate cleaning product recommended by your manufacturer. You should do this at least once a week and while you’re at it also clean the door jambs and door sills.
Clean the windows both inside and out including the front and rear windscreens. Don’t forget to do the mirrors as well.
Empty ashtrays or any other rubbish receptacles you have.
Pay special attention to the dashboard area as this is the most visible part of the car and where you are looking most of the time. It makes sense to keep this looking pristine because it is like your signature! This is the area that people will judge you on.
Monthly Tasks.
Shampoo the interior carpets after removing the floor mats.
Wipe down the interior dashboard and cockpit areas with a detailing spray that you can find in any supermarket.
Perform the other weekly cleaning tasks mentioned above.
Quarterly.
Clean all leather and vinyl seats and surfaces with a proprietary cleaning product.
Check the area under the rear windscreen and carefully remove accumulated dirt and dust that may have been missed during previous cleaning. Sometimes insects become lodged at the edge of the carpet or other surface protector and can be difficult to see.
You will also need to perform spot cleaning from time to time when food or drink is spilt on the seats for example. Leather is easier to clean and you will not have any trouble if you have been using a good leather preserver. Carpet can take a little more care and you will need to use a gentle circular rubbing motion when cleaning up spills.
Now that you know how to do it keeping your car clean should be relatively easy and you won’t have to rely upon your car mechanic to do the work for you.
